The Kumaraguru Institute of Agriculture (KIA) has signed an MoU with Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) to establish a trial plot under National Bamboo Mission (NBM), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.
While IFGTB was represented by its Director S Senthilkumar, Muniasamy, Correspondent, KIA represented the institute. As the MOU was signed during the time of a pandemic, it happened online, and the documents were exchanged physically through a messenger, avoiding any kind of crowding.
Scientists from IFGTB, under National Bamboo Mission will be planting 5 different species of commercially cultivatable thornless bamboo varieties in our farmlands and guide the institution for the next five years in managing and raising the plantation. This 5-acre plot will also serve as demonstration plots for farmers across Tamil Nadu to create awareness on planting commercially viable bamboo species and also adopting the funding support of National Bamboo Mission (NBM), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. Some of the bamboo crops that will be planted are Bamboosa tulda, Bamboosa vulgaris, Bamboosa nutans, and Bamboosa balcooa.
Kumaraguru Institute of Agriculture will also use this plot to educate and empower students on Agro-Forestry and also encourage students to take up student research projects with the guidance from the scientists from IFGTB.
The Kumaraguru Institute of Agriculture (KIA), affiliated with Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) was established in the year 2014 in the fertile and dynamic agricultural region of Western Tamilnadu. Though being a young institution, it has emerged as a top school preferred by students for pursuing their education. The over 100-acre campus is situated in Sakthi Nagar in the district of Erode.
