Women Attempt Suicide at Collectorate Seeking Action Against Fraudsters

A group of women and children doused themselves with kerosene and attempted to commit suicide in front of the district collectorate here on Monday. Police personnel who were on duty apprehended the protesters and informed fire and rescue service personnel who rushed to the district collectorate and sprayed water on them, foiling the suicide bid just in time.

More than 50 people, mostly women from Venmani Nagar near Bellathy in Karamadai, gathered in front of the district collectorate here on Monday afternoon. Around 20 women and a few children attempted self-immolation, demanding action against those who collected thousands of rupees from them, promising to provide basic amenities in Venmani Nagar. However, they were just false promises.

The protesters lodged a petition to the district collector Archana Patnaik, stating that over 100 families were residing in Venmani Nagar and their Panchami land was retrieved from encroachers after they conducted severe protests. "We had been struggling for years to get patta from the district administration. We were approached by a few people who promised us water, electricity and patta from the government. Trusting them, we parted with thousands of rupee.Later, we approached Bellathy panchayat president Boopathy alias Kumaresan who promised to provide us with the basic facilities free of cost," said the protesters.

The protesters said that they had lodged several petitions against the culprits with the district administration and police officials but no action was taken.

The petition has been forwarded to the respective department officials for further action.
