Single mother wins award for her service to humanity

When three years ago 27-year-old Subbulakshmi came to the city after her husband deserted her, she had no one to go to. She had to look after her two young sons and sought the help of an NGO. Little did she know that she would be conferred with an award for her services to the community one day. 

"I have been through really difficult times. I was not even exposed to community or social service in my village located near Tirupathur," she said. Today, Subbulakshmi has helped over 67 homeless bed-ridden patients who had been sent out of hospitals due to lack of space.

"Earlier, I just wanted shelter for my kids. But when I realized I could help the society in my own little way, it felt good," she said. She also takes care of 16 homeless kids in an orphanage named Helping Hearts. "If I am alive today it is because of that NGO and its managing director," she said on receiving the exemplary humanity service award.

More than 250 rotarians of Coimbatore city took part in the zonal meet of the Rotaract Club held in the city on Sunday where 12 best projects were awarded. "There are over 45 active clubs in the city including campus and community service clubs. To promote the campus clubs we selected 12 best projects," said Ramaswami, zone Rotaract representative of Rotaract3201. Saibaba Colony's club won the best community service club and Krishna College's Rotaract club won an award for the project, Attakasam, in which they tied up with theme parks and used a percentage of the ticket money for social service.

Many other colleges such as PSG College of Arts and Science and PSGR Krishnamal College for Women also won awards for the cyclathon and other events held by them. "We want more youngsters to take part in community service," said Ramaswami.
