Jewellers intensify protest

Nearly 5,000 jewellers formed human chain in different parts of the city on Thursday, protesting against the levy of one percent excise duty on jewellery.

B. Muthuvenkatraman, president of Coimbatore Jewellery Manufacturers’ Association, said the participants, which included retailers, manufacturers, goldsmiths, bullion dealers and refiners, held placards and staged protest on Raja Street, Oppanakara Street, Big Bazaar Street, and Cross Cut Road.

One-day fast

It has also been decided that as the next step they will observe one-day fast on March 14 at Sivananda Colony. Jewellers from across the district are expected to take part. The retailers and manufacturers are on indefinite strike here from Tuesday demanding withdrawal of the proposed levy.
