Women’s Studies Centre at Providence College for Women

A Women’s Studies Centre was inaugurated by the Department of History, Providence College for Women, at Coonoor, in The Nilgiris. It was inaugurated by Mercy Jacob, Superior General, Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes, France, in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee year of the college.

Motto

The motto of the Centre is the same as that of the United Nations’ theme for International Women’s Day 2016 “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality’.

Provincial of the Mysore Province Juliana D’Souza and Secretary Assumpta K. and college principal Sheela V.J. were present on the occasion.

Awareness

Head of the Department of History S.M. Sangeetha said that the centre will create awareness, identify gender issues in the local and global level, introduce new areas of gender research, build data, disseminate information, create extensive documentation of women’s participation and leadership in protest movements, partner with NGOs and other centres for research and for action projects on women studies.

Seminars

“It will organise seminars and workshops to impart humanities based knowledge that would be converted to skills, based on social and global demands. While focus is on women’s contribution, the centre aims to create awareness among men and women oo the need to work towards social progress,” Ms. Sangeetha said.
