Elephant safari at Mudumalai to resume today

Udhagamandalam: Elephant safari at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in the Nilgiris will resume on Wednesday. The regular jumbo safari was cancelled since January 7, after the 48-day rejuvenation camp for 24 tamed elephants got underway at Theppakadu elephant camp located within the MTR.

The state-sponsored rejuvenation camp for the jumbos, including four 'kumki' (trainer) elephants, concluded on Tuesday.

Of the 24 elephants, eight are used for safari, while two elephants, Bama,70, and Indher, 55, are pensioners. Among them were 15 males, two makkanas (males without tusks) and seven females.

According to D Chandran, deputy director of MTR and Mukurthi National park, all the elephants, which are normally used for training other jumbos, safari and patrolling in border areas of the reserve forest, were completely rested at the camp.

"As the 48-day rejuvenation camp concludes on Tuesday, elephant safari will start at MTR from Wednesday," Chandran said.
