Extra electronic voting machines to be kept on standby

Coimbatore: Anticipating an increase in the number of candidates standing for election this year, the district electionofficer plans to have more electronic voting machines (EVMs) in place.

The district administration has brought 7,000 EVMs from Bihar, which would be distributed to the 2,892 polling stationsacross ten assembly constituencies in Coimbatore. If more than 31candidates contest in the election from an assembly segment, then each polling station would require three EVMs. Hence, the officials have now sought 5,000 more EVMs from Jharkhand.

Coimbatore district has ten assembly constituencies including Coimbatore South, Coimbatore North, Kavundampalayam, Mettupalayam, Singanallur, Sulur, Thondamuthur, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi and Valparai.

"We have brought 7,052 ballot units and 4,000 control units from Bihar for the ten assembly constituencies. As many as 2,500 votes can be recorded in each control unit. The polling booths would have below 1,482 votes," said a senior officer from the election wing.
