Students Protest Delay in Issuing Semester Marksheet, Detained

Around 300 students of the NGM College of Arts and Science were detained on Tuesday morning for blocking the road near the sub-collector's office in Pollachi. The students were protesting against the college management for withholding results of the last three semesters, over an alleged issue between an assistant professor and the college principal.

Students said an assistant professor of the mathematics department had refused to award internal marks, which accounts for 25 marks of the total 100 marks for each subject in the semester exam. A third year BSc physics student told TOI, "We are bearing the brunt of a tiff between the assistant professor and the college principal. The professor, in an attempt to get back at the principal, decided not to award internal marks to the students,"

On Monday, the students of physics and chemistry departments staged a sit-in protest in the college demanding the college administration to intervene into the matter. According to the students, the assistant professor had obtained some set of documents against the college through an RTI appeal, which had caused some issues between him and the college administration. The assistant professor of mathematics Siruvanan, despite repeated attempts was not available for comment.

Due to the prolonged delay in publishing the semester results students have been unable to apply for job placements or higher studies. "It also affects final year students with arrears, as they can't rewrite the exam before the end of the third year," said the student.

The delay has also made life harder for students studying on scholarship. During the protest, a girl student fainted after being attacked by the police, when she questioned them on why her friends were being dragged into a police van. "I was first attacked by a female police and then hit by three other cops," said the student in third year BSc physics. Later in the evening, the college management published a circular stating, "This is to assure the students of physics and chemistry that the results of ancillary mathematics for all semesters will be published on or before February 22."
