'Cash for vote' complaints on the rise as the D-day nears

With the poll just round the corner, complaints of parties bribing voters have shot up. DMK men and election officials have been on their toes since Thursday night as complaints kept pouring in.

AIADMK councillor from 14th ward, Thirumalayampalayam town panchayat, was arrested by the police for attempting to distribute money to voters on Thursday night. Police have seized Rs7.87lakh from him. Two IPC sections were invoked against him.

The arrested person was identified as P Sundaram alias Krishnamoorthy, 53, from Kumittipathy village. He is the 14th ward councillor of Thirumalayampalayam town panchayat. At 10pm on Thursday, the rural police stopped him at Navakkarai and checked his motorcycle. They found Rs7.87lakh in a box attached to the vehicle and seized it.

He confessed that the cash was meant for distribution to voters. KG Chavadi police registered a case against Krishnamoorthy for bribery. He was arrested and produced before a judicial magistrate court. Later, he was remanded in judicial custody. Meanwhile two AIADMK men were caught red handed while attempting to distribute T-shirts with Chief Minister J Jayalaithaa's picture, track suits, plastic flags and two leaves symbol of the AIADMK party at Rottikadai Maidan near Peelamedu here on Friday.

A team of DMK men noticed the duo with T-shirts and immediately handed them over to the Singanallur assembly returning officer V Mohan who left them in the custody of Peelamedu police.
