Residents stage hunger strike seeking patta

Agitated with the Coimbatore District Administration for not providing them with patta even after a High Court residents of the Bharathi Nagar from Podanur, staged a hunger strike in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday.

According to Stephen, one of the residents, around 500 families are residing in the Bharathi Nagar coming under the 98th ward of the Coimbatore Corporation for more than 30 years.

The State Government on 1991 claimed in a Government order that the area had been grabbed by the government to which the residents had sought the intervention of the High Court, which had ordered the State Government to hand over the land documents to the residents.

"Even after the ruling came in 2012, the Government has not handed over the documents to us despite repeated queries," he said adding that the members had already staged a protest with one of the zone offices earlier.

He further added that the residents were suffering from various issues in making alterations as they do not possess the documents for the land in which they were residing.
