Three men in guise of campaigners rob woman

Three men pretending to be campaigners for the Assembly election robbed a woman in broad daylight at her house in Kothari Nagar, near Singanallur, on Monday.

Assistant Commissioner (Crime) for East Sub-Division of the City Police D. Baskaran said that two special teams have been formed to nab the accused.

The victim M. Valliammal (62) lived alone in the first floor of the house that she owned and tenants lived in the ground floor.

Her relatives reside in the vicinity. Around 11 a.m. on Monday, three men aged 20 years to 25 years went to her house pretending to be party cadre.

“Introducing themselves as campaigners, they asked her for which party she would cast her vote. Before she could give them a reply, they asked for some water as they were tired campaigning in the hot sun,” Mr. Baskaran said. The trio followed her into the house as she went in to get them water.

They asked her to remove her gold chain and pair of ear-rings she wore.

She obeyed and handed over her chain and an ear-ring. She was removing the other ear-ring when someone rang the bell in the ground floor.

The trio immediately left the house with an ear-ring and the chain - weighing a little more than three sovereigns.

“While she was in a state of shock and did not raise an alarm, the trio went past the neighbour too, who assumed them to be her relatives. Going to her house, the neighbour realised that the trio were robbers,” the Assistant Commissioner said.

A case was registered under section 392 (punishment for robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.

Soon after the incident, the police conducted intensive vehicle checks to nab the three men.
