Mill Road commute turns 4-hour ordeal for people

With the corporation digging it up almost every fortnight, Mill Road has now become a commuter's nightmare.

The Mill Road was blocked on Saturday for road work and the area witnessed traffic congestion for over four hours. Vehicles were seen stuck in traffic snarl from Poo Market to Avinashi Road flyover. The situation turned worse as commuters took on the job of controlling the traffic in the absence of any traffic police.

Irked commuters have called on the police department to do way with the one-way traffic diversion on Brooke-Bond Road to clear the congestion.

"Mill Road poses a new problem to commuters almost every week," said Subramanian, a regular commuter on that route. The corporation, he pointed out, often takes up some work or the other on the stretch, be it digging up of drains, laying of a layer of bitumen, or digging up of road to check water pipeline leakage or repairing of road cave-ins.

Another commuter, Rajesh, said his wife often gets stuck in traffic and had nearly escaped an accident once because of the congestion. "She drops and picks up my son from school and takes this route often. Because of the heavy traffic between 12pm - 3pm, she faces unwanted delays," he said.
