Appointment of temple priests sought

Dravida Kazhagam (DK) members picketed the office of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) office here on Monday urging the State Government to appoint trained persons across communities as temple priests. The police arrested 60, including 15 women, for organising the protest.

According to them, the Supreme Court on December 16, 2015, upheld the Bill passed by the State Government on December 2, 1970, that people from across castes are eligible to be appointed as temple priests on acquiring required education qualification.

But, even four months after the verdict, the State Government has not appointed 206 people, from various castes, who are qualified to become temple priests.

Reason

“Reason for the unnecessary delay by the government in issuing appointment orders to these persons is not known,” said district president of the organisation P. Mohan.
