Teacher, student from corporation school to talk on education in US

A student and a teacher from a corporation school in city will soon represent the country in New York. They will speak at a conference and share how technology-enabled learning benefitted them.

Out of entries from over 10 states in the country in which students and teachers from several districts participated, only these two have been selected. The event will be held in June in New York.

This is a part of the 15th anniversary celebrations of the American India Foundation, a non-profit organisation working towards improving education in government and corporation schools. "They will speak on the topic - 'Transforming India's classrooms through technologies'," said a volunteer of the organisation. For A Anju, science teacher at corporation high school, P N Pudur, this came as a surprise. "This is the best moment of my life. I have never been to any foreign country before. This is a dream come true for me," she said. She said that under the digital equaliser programme of AIF, she had used technology mainly to garner the interest of slow learners.

V Keerthana, class 8 student of Maniyakarampalayam corporation high school, said that she had always wanted to go to the US for further studies but did not know that the moment would arrive this early in her life.

In her interviews, she spoke about her experience and the benefits she received out of the programme. "It not only improved my academics but also my personality. I learnt to speak English and also have become more confident as a person because of these programmes," said Keerthana. Extremely excited to share her experiences with the world, she has already begun preparations for her speech. Keerthana's father is a mill worker and she said her elder sister was studying engineering under sponsorship. "I wish to become a doctor one day and would definitely go back to the US for my higher studies," she said.

Both have applied for their visa and they would attend the event in June. Corporation officials said that this was a great moment for them and that such opportunities brought out the talent of these children as most of come from humble backgrounds.
