Cop encroached on government land, Right to Information query reveals

A police inspector based in Tirupur has encroached upon government land, alleged a former DMK councillor, Kaja Khan. He said the official, A Vijayalakshmi, who had served as sub-inspector of police in Coimbatore city police till 2015, was constructing her house on Chathiram Street near Podanur market on corporation-owned land.

"As per the RTI documents and the replies to my queries, the land on which the inspector has been building her home belonged to the Coimbatore Corporation," said Kaja Khan. He had notified the revenue officials including the village administrative officer and the tahsildhar a month ago. "So far, action has not been taken," he said. The cost of the land is estimated at Rs1crore, said Kaja Khan.

As per officials, 1.16 acres of land belonging to the government was given on lease to Vijayalakshmi's father, Ammasai Gounder in 1971 for a duration of ten years. But, in 1977, when panchayat officials wanted to cancel the lease, Ammasai approached the court and got an order in his favour in 1981. He handed over one acre of land for construction of government hostels and on the remaining 16 cents he constructed a home and engaged in farming. Corporation officials wanted to set up the corporation office and later a park as well but had failed to reclaim the land.

Inspector Vijayalakshmi, who is posted at the traffic investigation wing of Tirupur police said, "We have owned the land for over 47 years and we have a court order in our favour. My brother has constructed a house on 5 cents and my husband began construction a year ago," said Vijayalakshmi. She also accepted that she did not get any approval from the Coimbatore Corporation.
