Clash over transporting calves

There was a minor clash between members of a Hindu outfit and beef merchants after the former stopped a mini goods carrier that was carrying 19 calves and a cow from Tirupur to Coimbatore on Monday evening.

The vehicle was stopped by Maheshkanth and Sowminathan near Rajalakshmi Mill on the Trichy Road. The vehicle driver called a few others for his support, resulting in a push and pull between the two sides, following which Hindu outfit members picketed the Singanallur police station. The 20 animals were also brought to the station.

Inspector S. Syed Babu said that both parties have alleged attack by the other group.

“We have received a complaint from Mahesh Kanth on alleged illegal transportation of the animals. The traders, too, said they will prefer a complaint, alleging assault by the Hindu outfit members,” he said and added that further course of action will be initiated after inquiring both the complainants.
