Voter awareness campaign launched

Officials in the Coimbatore South Assembly constituency went around low-voter turn out areas pasting voter awareness stickers.

Officials in-charge of conducting elections said that after identifying such areas based on poll percentage in the 2014 general elections, the officials went to those localities and pasted stickers on houses and commercial establishments to tell voters that May 16 was the polling date and that people should vote.

The exercise would continue for the next few days to cover all low-voter turnout areas, the officials said. This is in addition to using street theatre artists, college students and others to stage shows/rallies/theatre to encourage voters to vote.

In the Nilgiris on Wednesday, Collector P. Shankar inaugurated an electronic voting machine demonstration camp at the Ooty bus stand. A release from the district administration quoting the Collector said that the demonstration using model EVM was to help voters to vote with ease and aimed at improving the poll percentage.

This would be of help to elderly voters and also those going to vote for the first time. The administration was also taking efforts to reach out to the voters by pasting voter awareness stickers on LPG cylinders, buses, tourist vehicles, ATMs, etc. The district administration had also pasted the stickers at public distribution centres (ration shops).

Facilitation Centre

The Nilgiris district administration has started a voter facilitation centre for voters in the Gudalur Assembly constituency at the office of the Revenue Divisional Officer.

A release said that the centre would function from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all working days.

People could go there to get enrolled in the voters’ list, carry out corrections or remove entries. Voters could also go to the centre to get elector’s photo identity card by paying Rs. 25 and they would get the card within 15 days. Plus, political parties could also visit the centre to get permission for meetings or use of vehicles.
