NGT Southern Bench to move to Kalas Mahal on July 1

The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal will start functioning from Kalas Mahal, the heritage building that was once part of the Chepauk Palace, from July 1.

The inauguration of the Tribunal’s bench at the new premises, has been scheduled for May 27, Justice P. Jyothimani told The Hindu. Members from the NGT’s other benches, including its Chairperson, will be attending the event. The tribunal will start functioning from the new premises from July 1, after the court holiday in June.

According to Justice Jyothimani, they have invited two judges of the Supreme Court to attend the event and have requested the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court as well to grace the event. “We are hoping they will come depending on their availability,” he said. The bench also will meet Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami next week to invite him.

Following the inauguration ceremony, a three-hour workshop on solid waste management will be held. “Nearly 1,000 people, including officials of municipal corporations, corporations, local bodies, PWD, law students, and others will take part in the seminar. There is a need to understand and learn about solid waste management,” Justice Jyothimani said.

The bench is currently functioning at Arumbakkam and has two courts. This will now be housed at Kalas Mahal, spread over 22,000 sq.ft, and will have three court halls and rooms for the Registrar, Chairman and other members.

Ravaged by fire in 2012

Kalas Mahal suffered extensive damage in a fire in 2012. PWD officials had told The Hindu earlier this year that the renovation of the structure cost Rs. 14.5 crore and had to be executed through careful sourcing of construction material to match the heritage of the building and skilled labour had to be brought in from other parts of Tamil Nadu for the conservation work.
