Rural Coimbatore reports 1,714 accidents from January to September 2024, an increase from 1,626 in the same period last year, despite road widening and traffic regulation efforts.
Coimbatore: Despite recent road widening projects, intensified traffic regulations, and new rules in rural Coimbatore, road safety remains a significant concern. The number of road accidents continues to rise, alarming both authorities and residents.
According to data from the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore range, rural parts of the district witness at least five accidents daily, with one typically being fatal. The rural Coimbatore area reported 1,714 accidents from January 1 to September 2 this year, compared to 1,626 during the same period last year.
While the number of fatal accidents remains relatively constant, non-fatal accidents have seen a noticeable increase. This year, 1,263 non-fatal accidents resulted in injuries to 1,701 people, up from 1,174 accidents injuring 1,550 people in the previous year. Fatal accidents claimed 470 lives in 451 incidents this year, compared to 476 deaths in 452 accidents last year.
A senior police officer expressed concern over the rising numbers, stating, "The increase in accidents is worrying, especially considering the various dedicated measures implemented to reduce them."
Speeding remains a primary cause of accidents, along with rash and negligent driving, often under the influence of alcohol. The Pollachi-Negamam road, Coimbatore-Pollachi road, and L&T bypass are identified as major accident-prone stretches, accounting for 30 fatal accidents alone.
While some roads like Avinashi Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Mettupalayam Road, and the Coimbatore-Sulur stretch have seen a decrease in accidents following road widening and median installations, the overall trend remains concerning.
Neighboring districts present a mixed picture. Erode, Tirupur, and the Nilgiris have reported a decrease in fatal accidents but an increase in non-fatal ones. Erode saw 407 deaths in 391 fatal accidents, down from 481 deaths in 451 accidents last year. Rural Tirupur reported 424 fatalities in 404 accidents, a decrease from 517 deaths in 495 accidents. The Nilgiris district recorded 28 fatalities in 26 accidents, compared to 43 deaths in 39 accidents in the previous year.
