5 detained for murder over cricket match dispute

Five people were detained by the city police on Monday for murdering a 27-year-old construction site supervisor at Rathinapuri on Sunday night.

According to the police, a petty quarrel arose between two groups of youths over a cricket match, which ultimately led to the murder.

The deceased had admonished the rival group which retaliated by entering the victim's room and assaulting him with wooden logs and beer bottles.

The deceased was identified as S Thamaraiselvan, 27, a native of Theni. He resided in a rented room with his younger brother S Prasanth, 22, a bike mechanic at Chinnaraj Nagar in Rathinapuri.

According to police, there was previous enmity between the two teams of players over a cricket match. On Sunday, Prasanth got into an argument with a member of the rival gang, in Thillai Nagar. He was assaulted by a group of youths. He informed his elder brother Thamaraiselvan about the incident. Thamaraiselvan went to the spot and admonished the group that had assaulted his brother.

At 7pm, Thamaraiselvan was in his room when the rival gang entered with deadly weapons and assaulted him severely. They also assaulted Prasanth and his friend Jagadeesh who tried to save Thamaraiselvan. The injured Thamaraiselvan was rushed to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him as brought dead.

Thamaraiselvan's kin gathered at CMCH premises on Monday morning. Tension prevailed when they refused to receive his body, demanding immediate arrest of the accused. They tried to conduct road block in front of the CMCH but the police intervened and assured them that the murderers would be arrested soon. They withdrew their protest eventually and received the body from the hospital.

City police officials confirmed that they have detained five youths in connection with the murder case. But they cannot reveal their names as of now. The detained youths will be arrested on Tuesday.
