TNAU Celebrates National Librarians' Day with Competitions and Honors

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University celebrated National Librarians' Day on August 12, 2024, honoring Dr. S.R. Ranganathan's legacy. The event featured competitions, speeches, and recognition of former librarians.


Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) celebrated National Librarians' Day on August 12, 2024, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the father of library sciences. The event, organized by the Centre for Students' Welfare, aimed to promote the importance of libraries and encourage reading habits among students.



Dr. K.M. Sellamuthu, Professor of Soil Science and Library in-charge, initiated the function with a welcome address. Dr. N. Maragatham, Dean of the Centre for Students' Welfare, presided over the event, emphasizing the significance of reading books and cultivating knowledge through reading habits.

The celebration featured Dr. C. Samson, English Faculty and Principal of S.N.V. Global School, Coimbatore, as the chief guest. In his speech, Dr. Samson highlighted the importance of libraries and the pride of librarians. Dr. K. Thangaraj, Professor of English, delivered the felicitation address.

A special highlight of the event was the honoring of former TNAU librarians, including Prof. K. Balasubramanian, Th. R. Borayan, and Dr. K. Perumalsamy. These veterans shared their experiences with students and motivated them to utilize library resources for career advancement.

Various competitions were conducted to encourage reading habits and regular library usage among students. Prizes were distributed to the winners, further motivating them to engage with the library's resources.

The event also served as an opportunity for students to learn about the library's facilities and the benefits of reading printed books. Dr. S. Rani, Librarian in-charge, concluded the program with a vote of thanks.



National Librarians' Day is celebrated annually to honor Dr. S.R. Ranganathan's contributions to library science. Ranganathan was instrumental in initiating library laws and advocating for their implementation across all states to ensure proper functioning of libraries.
