Coimbatore Mayor Election Scheduled for August 6

Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati announces indirect election for Coimbatore Mayor on August 6. The election follows the resignation of former Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar amid controversies and party disputes.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation is set to elect a new Mayor through an indirect election on August 6, as announced by District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati on July 25. This election comes in the wake of former Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar's resignation, which was accepted without debate in a recent corporation meeting.

Kalpana Anandakumar's tenure as Mayor was marked by controversies and conflicts within the DMK party. She faced criticism for not respecting party executives and clashing with zonal heads of the corporation. Additionally, complaints arose regarding her inadequate involvement in parliamentary election work.

Further controversies surrounded Kalpana's husband, Anandakumar, who was accused of collecting market fees, demanding commissions from contractors, and harassing a female neighbor to vacate her house. These issues led to the party leadership instructing Kalpana to resign.

Citing health issues and family circumstances, Kalpana Anandakumar submitted her resignation to Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran. Following her resignation, a regular meeting of the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation was held, chaired by Deputy Mayor Vetri Selvan, with the participation of Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran and councilors from DMK and AIADMK.

The State Election Commission recently granted permission to District Collectors to conduct meetings and indirect elections to fill the vacant Mayor positions in Tirunelveli and Coimbatore Corporations. In light of this, Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati, who is also the election officer, has announced that the indirect election for the Coimbatore Mayor post will be held on August 6 at 10:30 AM.

Following this announcement, the DMK leadership is expected to select and announce a candidate. On the day of the election, corporation members will elect the Mayor. Given DMK's majority strength in the council, it is likely that their candidate will be elected unopposed as the new Mayor of Coimbatore.
