Affordable Food Sales Launched at Railway Stations for Unreserved Passengers

Indian Railway's IRCTC has started selling affordable food at different railway stations from April 24, targeting unreserved passengers traveling during summer, including Coimbatore and Mettupalayam.

Coimbatore: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) recently kick-started an affordable food sales initiative to cater to unreserved passengers across various railway stations during the summer travel season. This initiative aims to provide economical dining options at 34 stations in the first phase, including prominent stations in Chennai, Trichy, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, and Mettupalayam.

Under the scheme, passengers can buy 'Economy Meals' which include options like lemon rice, tamarind rice, curd rice, or khichdi weighing 200 grams for just Rs. 20. Additionally, 325 grams of either poori masala and bhaji or 'Janata Khana' are also available under the same price range. Moreover, snack meals such as masala dosa and other South Indian dishes, weighing up to 350 grams, are being sold for Rs. 50.

To further assist travelers, water bottles of 200 ml are sold at Rs. 3 each. The position of these food outlets is strategically placed close to the general compartments' platforms, making it convenient for travelers to purchase meals. The officials informed today, April 24, that the setup at Coimbatore's station has received positive feedback from the public.

These food stalls are set up on the walkways near the unreserved compartments, allowing easy access for passengers to buy affordable meals without any prior booking. The introduction of these food outlets is part of a broader initiative to enhance the travel experience by providing cost-effective and accessible food options for all passengers, especially those who travel unplanned or do not have the facility to book their meals in advance.
