Arulmigu Dharmalingeswarar Swamy Temple Under Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department's Scrutiny Amid Financial Irregularities

The Arulmigu Dharmalingeswarar Swamy Temple in Madhukkarai, Coimbatore district, now operates under the strict supervision of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department following various financial irregularities reported in the past year.

Coimbatore: Situated in the lush western Ghats of the Marapalam area in Madhukkarai, the revered Arulmigu Dharmalingeswarar Swamy Temple has been a center of devotion, especially during the monthly Pournami, where thousands of devotees perform Girivalam (circumambulation of the sacred mountain). The temple has come under the complete control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department after numerous issues were reported in the past, including financial misconduct.

In recent times, there has been extensive coverage about financial malpractice at the temple in various newspapers and social media over the last year. Following multi-stage investigations by the department officials, a custodian and an executive officer have been appointed to manage the temple's affairs. This temple, which usually sees a high turnout of devotees on special occasions and holidays, also conducts annadanam (offering of food) on days such as Pournami and Pradosham. It’s claimed that the expenses for these events are borne by sponsors, and collections from devotees are solicited through hundis and donations.

However, the transparency of hundi collections and donations remains undisclosed, causing concern among the faithful. There’s a significant number of individuals prioritized at the temple who lack the personal ethics expected in their roles. The upcoming Chitra Pournami on April 23, 2024, is anticipated to draw close to one lakh devotees, highlighting the special significance of Girivalam in this temple within Coimbatore district. On that day alone, donations may range between eight to ten lakh rupees.

Amidst the temple's popularity, the public is voicing concerns similar to past indiscretions where certain individuals siphoned off income. Despite previous allegations of financial fraud and administrative misconduct against temple staff, it appears that similar practices continue. The public and devotees expect the current administrators appointed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department to operate with transparency and have urged them to publicize the temple's expenditures and sponsorship details, much like other temples do, to allow well-wishers to contribute knowingly to specific causes.
