Gang rivalry: Man on bail assaulted near court premises

In a clear case of rivalry among members of a gang, an accused in an assault case was attacked near court premises while he was returning after completing court formalities here on Wednesday afternoon. He has been admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital with injuries on his left arm and his head.

According to police, A Karthik, 25, an accused in an assault case registered with Selvapuram police station, came to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court sign some documents on Wednesday. Karthik was on conditional bail. He was on his way back after completing court formalities when three armed men, who were in an inebriated condition, attacked him just behind the court premises.

The trio reportedly attacked Karthik with sickles and knives. Karthik has registered a complaint with the Race Course police station.

The accused have been identified as Balaji, Vivek and Gundu Saravanan. Police on the case said the three were members of the same gang that Karthik belonged to and accomplices in several crimes. "Karthik was one of their gang members. They had committed several petty crimes and assault cases together," said the official.

When the incident occurred the three were in an inebriated condition, the official added.

The trio have managed to escape from the spot after assaulting Karthik. "We have formed a special team to nab them," said another police official, adding that several cases were pending against them in Big Bazaar police station and Selvapuram police station.

"These men are all ex-convicts and have several cases registered against them. We will nab them soon," the investigating official said.
