Cauvery Calling Movement and The Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR - IISR) will jointly organise a unique seminar on the cultivation of aromatic crops in the plains on 16 th July in the Pudukottai district.
Cauvery Calling Movement and The Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR - IISR) will jointly organise a unique seminar on the cultivation of aromatic crops in the plains on 16 th July in the Pudukottai district. More than a thousand farmers from all over Tamil Nadu are going to participate in this event.
A press conference in this regard was held at the Chennai Press Club today (July 14).
Tamil Maran, Tamil Nadu State Field Coordinator of the Cauvery Calling Movement, addressed the media and shared, "Farmers who have successfully cultivated crops such as Pepper, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Coffee, Allspice and Ginger in the plains will join this seminar. Also, scientists from The Indian Institute of Spices Research (ICAR – IISR) Dr. K Kandiannan and Dr. Mohammad Faisal Peeran will be participating. They will explain the cultivation techniques of aromatic crops in the plains, high-yield methods, value addition etc.”
The seminar is going to be held in the pepper garden of Senthamil Selvan, a pepper farmer from Senthangudi village. He has been cultivating pepper for the past 10 years and is also growing pepper in Teak, Jackfruit, Gliricidia, Brick Pillars and Iron Nets. He grows pepper on two acres and earns a profit of four lakhs a year.
“The Cauvery Calling Movement is introducing ways for farmers who grow tree crops to generate a regular income. Many farmers intercrop vegetables, small grains, aromatic crops and tubers with tree crops. This enables a continuous stream of income without waiting to harvest tree crops. Most of the aromatic crops can be grown under the cool shade of the trees, creating the right conditions for tree farmers to generate additional income,” explained Tamil Maran.
“Isha has been conducting pepper cultivation training in the plains for the past 6 years. Countless farmers who participated in this training are now earning income by cultivating pepper. Cauvery Calling conducts this exercise with the aim of increasing the income of the farmers as aromatic crops can also grow well in the plains.” ended Tamil Maran.
Farmers Valluvan and Thirumalai also participated in the press conference. Thirumalai, a farmer from Cuddalore, has been cultivating pepper in his garden for the past 15 years. He has also grown pepper on Timber trees, Coconut, Gliricidia, Palm and Cashew trees. Valluvan from Pollachi successfully earns by planting Nutmeg between coconut trees. He participated in pepper cultivation training conducted by Isha 6 years ago and now he is successfully harvesting pepper.
