Goods carrier drivers protest against exorbitant fines

Protesting “heavy” fines imposed on goods carriers with load beyond the permitted limits, goods carrier drivers blocked the road at Chinthamani on Monday morning. A few drivers were removed from the road and later released. The rest were warned that action will continue against vehicles plying with excess load.

Chinthamani Junction is frequented by dozens of goods carriers taking several loads of vegetables and other items to the Flower Market, Kumaran Market and MGR Market.

Visibility Hit

Traffic police said that overloading by mini goods carriers had resulted in vehicles becoming faulty and remaining stranded on the road, affecting traffic. Police said it also affected visibility and that they were booking such cases for about three months.

The drivers on protest alleged that the police imposed a fine of Rs. 2,000 for overloading and Re. 1 extra for every kg beyond the permissible load. They also claimed that the police were very stringent in enforcement and slapped heavy fines, even if the load was only a few kg beyond the limit.

Drivers urged the police to have some relaxation on the ceiling as the transport officials had given them some concession on the loading limits. Following protests, police registered fewer cases on overloaded vehicles during the day but warned that the drive against overloaded vehicles would continue.
