National Awards 2016: Vetrimaaran's 'Visaranai' wins three honours for Kollywood

After winning appreciation from critics and the audience, "Visaranai" has now got national recognition. Vetrimaaran's critically-acclaimed flick has walked away with three honours at the 63rd National Awards.

"Visaranai," which is produced by Dhanush on his home banner of Wunderbar Films, bagged the National Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, Best Editor (late Kishore TE) and Best Supporting Actor (Samuthirakani).

Music legend Ilaiyaraaja has won Best Background Score Award for Bala's "Thaarai Thappattai" and Ritika Singh earned a special mention for her stupendous performance in Madhavan-starrer "Irudhi Suttru." Ramesh Sippy headed the 11-member jury, which announced the winners Monday, March 28.

However, production house Wunderbar Films thanked the jury on Twitter. It wrote, "Humbled for the National Award this year for #Visaaranai; it's overwhelming to see such gesture for making a honest film. Thank you juries."

"Visaranai" is based on a novel titled "Lock Up," penned by M Chandrakumar. The film narrates the story of the author, who was once arrested on false charges along with his three friends. How the people in authority completely misuse power and physically torture poor boys to admit to a crime that they never committed form the crux of the story.

Dinesh, Anandhi, Aadukalam Murugadoss, Samuthirakani, Kishore, Mishal Ghoshal and others are part of "Visaranai" cast. The brilliant and realistic narration backed by stunning performance from the cast impressed the viewers and critics.

The movie had also won appreciation from the likes of Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, AR Murugadoss and others.
