‘Protect tigers’

Protecting tigers helps conserve the eco system, said K. Sankar, director of Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON).

He was speaking at the World Forest Day Special Enviro-Meet here on Wednesday.

The event was jointly organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, (ICCIC) and Osai Environmental Organisation. “We have one of the best bio diversities in the world and 25 per cent carnivores in the world are in India,” he said.According to him, man-tiger conflict was existing everywhere.

“When prey base is less in the forest or when they are injured they try to get easy prey like cattle. At times human beings get killed,” he said.President of Osai K. Kalidasan spoke on the hurdles in forest conservation.

A documentary on ‘Save Our Sholas’ was screened at the event.

ICCIC president D. Nandakumar, and secretary Rajesh B. Lund too spoke.
