Why Stroke Occurs More In Women?

Out of every 100 cases of stroke, 60 occur in women! In fact, strokes take the third place in the list of health issues that cause death in women! Isn't it shocking? Health experts opine that most of the cases can be prevented with timely medical assistance, proper diet and exercise.

And yes, women are more vulnerable to stroke compared to men. Let us find out the reason why

What causes stroke? A broken blood vessel in the brain can cause it. Also, when the blood circulation to the brain gets affected, the stroke might occur. If the cells in the brain don't get enough oxygen, they die.

Some people recover and lead a normal life even after stroke but most of them may experience several problems like inability to speak, walk or live without help. So, stroke can disable a person in certain ways

What increases the risk? Obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension and smoking habit are some of the risk factors.

Why are women more vulnerable? Well, the risk of stroke increases with age. As the average lifespan of women is longer than men, the risk is more in women.

Hormone replacement therapy could also increase the risk. Overuse of contraceptives is also bad. Smoking and obesity can also raise the risk.

Women are said to be more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases. Some inflammatory disorders may lead to blood vessel damage or blood clots and this could increase the risk of stroke.

Some types of migraines also increase the stroke risk. Women are said to get affected by migraines more.

What are the signs women should keep in mind? Well, weakness in arms and face, difficulty in speech, numbness in some areas like legs, arms and face, sudden headaches and trouble walking are all some alarming signs of stroke.

Other signs include hiccups, fainting, seizures, pain, vomiting, weakness, and confusion. Even rapid changes in behavior could also occur.
