The plastic surgeons at the Coimbatore Medical College successfully re-implanted the amputated hand of a 21-year-old man through a crucial surgery and the patient is in good health now. This is their first successful hand reimplant.
Coimbatore: A 21-year-old's amputated hand was stitched back successfully by the Plastic surgeons at Coimbatore Medical College.

Ganesh, a 21-year-old youth from Orissa, arrived at the Tirupur GH with his amputated hand which he lost as he was hacked with a sickle due to a family dispute, on the 8th April at 1.30 am. He also had cuts on his neck, and back. He was from there directed for further treatment to the Government Medical College Hospital, Coimbatore at 5.50 a.m. on the same day.
The boy had lost an ample amount of blood, however, they had brought the severed arm safe and hygienic. They had placed the severed arm in a plastic bag wrapped in a clean, wet cloth, placed it in a box full of ice cubes and secured it so that the hands would not come directly into contact with the ice cube.
He was examined by the Plastic Surgery Department, including Head of the Department: Dr.VP Ramanan, Dr. R Senthil Kumar, Dr.S.Prakash, Dr. A. Kavitha priya, Dr.S.Sivakumar, Anaesthesiologist Dr.Sathish). The doctor's post examination decided to attach the severed hand.
The surgery began at 8 after the necessary tests and blood transfusion and the surgery lasted more than 5 hours and the bones, muscular nerves and blood vessels were trimmed together to give life to the arm.
The hospital sources gleefully stated that it has been 20 days after the surgery, and the young man is in good health and happy. Doctors at the department of plastic surgery successfully performed a high quality treatment on the young man worth several lakhs of rupees and this is their first successful re-implant.

They also thanked the dean, Dr Nirmala for her support and guidance.
