Coimbatore: Krishnamoorthy, 63yr male from Kovilmedu, Coimbatore district who is security by occupation, has been suffering from left sided lower abdomen swelling with pain for past 4 years.

For the last one year its size and pain severity increased, but due to Covid lockdown patients could not present themselves to hospital.

As Covid cases subsided, patientspresented themselves to the vascular surgery department of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital in July 2021. He was found to have large aneurysm (blood vessel tumor) of size 18 x 10 cm arising near previously operated hernia region which was in a condition of rupturing at any time. He was admitted immediately in vascular surgery department and evaluated with CT angiogram to assess its condition. With this life threatening condition in hand, Patient was operated on 22™ July.

Challenging operation

During the surgery, aneurysm was approached after taking control of blood vessels in abdomen and lower limb. Aneurysm was separated carefully from intestines and nerves meticulously without damaging any of them. Also it was made sure not to rupture the aneurysm while separating (it is like shaving over a balloon). Then an aneurysm sac opened 500 gm blood clots were removed and damaged arteries supplying to leg repaired along with aneurysm. It took 5 hours for the surgery with 2 units of blood transfusion. Patient recovered completely after the surgery and is doing well.

If this same procedure surgery was done in a good private hospital it would have cost nothing less than ₹5 lakhs. Here it is done free of cost under CMHC insurance scheme, with support and able guidance of the Dean Prof Dr A Nirmala along with medical SuperintendentProf Dr S Sadagopan. Surgery was performed successfully, by vascular surgery team headed by Prof K Rajesh along with vascular surgeons Dr P Vadivelu and Dr B Deepankumar, with anaesthetist team headed by Prof Prof.Dr.Kalyanasundaram & prof.
