"Solution to be implemented soon to ensure that online registered individuals and walk-in public at Centres are given equal priority for vaccinations:" Dr. S Raja, City Health Officer
"City’s Health Department is working on a solution to do justice to people who have registered online to get vaccinated and simultaneously also cater to public who visit centres to have their Covid-19 jab administered," stated a highly placed source from the city's Health department.
As many as 20 people who had registered online to have the vaccine dose administered visited the designated centre at Varadharajapuram at the stipulated time slots that were allotted to them on Monday afternoon. When the individuals reached the respective centre, health workers there informed them that the quota of vaccines for the day had already been administered to the public who walked into the centre in the morning.
This prompted those who have registered online to question the health workers as to why the online portal is still allowing people to register to take vaccination when the situation at ground zero is different where public walking in first are given priority and doses are administered as per the quota of vaccines that are allotted for the day.
In response, health workers reportedly retorted saying that they were merely following instructions of higher officials. Irate public who travelled several kilometres and been questioned by police officials on duty about the purpose of their travel during the lockdown, entered into a war of words with the health staff at the vaccination centre and refused to leave until provided with answers. As a temporary solution and with the intention to pacify the disappointed public, health workers at the Varadharajapuram centre made a note of the names and contact number of people who have registered online and missed the jab to be administered.
When this incident was brought to the notice of Dr. S Raja, City Health Officer, he expressed regret over the incident. When questioned as to what the Health Department plans to do to ensure that a repeat of the incident does not happen in the days to come at any of the centres, Dr. Raja assured saying, “We are considering the option to give equal priority to both people who have registered online to take the vaccination and public who walk into the Centres.â€
