Coimbatore Medical College sells Remdisivir amidst demand
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Medical College management on Saturday started selling Remdesivir, an antiviral drug used for the emergency cases among COVID-19 patients.
The move of opening up the sale counter for Remdesivir came along when other districts like Madurai started selling this drug in Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital.
Seeing the raise in demand for this injection a counter has now been set for sale in Coimbatore Government Hospital. The price for the medicine is 1,568 rupees per vial. However, each person can get at least a maximum of six vials, for the cost of Rs. 9,704, said the dean of Coimbatore Medical College, provided the original ID proofs.

Relatives of the COVID-19 patients can buy the drug at the counter in Coimbatore Medical College by showing the doctor's prescription, Aadhar card, RTPCR test positive and CT scan positive report of the patients.
Though the drug is non-life saving and advised by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to use it on patients who have to depend on external supply of oxygen to improve the condition of lungs, many people across the state flocked to the hospitals to buy the same, causing panic. Due to this, the price for the drug then increased substantially and sold at 9,000 rupees and above at few medical colleges and hospitals across the state.
Netizens have also said that Remdesivir tablets is in great demand and that some private hospitals are using this chance to swindle money. It is said that the drug is being sold for 25,000 and above at a few places in the state. While this drew strong disagreement from the public, the state has now started to open up its designated counter to fight against the demand.
Following this Coimbatore Medical College today opened its counter for the public to procure Remdesivir for the COVID patients. The college management failed to provide the details of the overall stock of the drug.
