Deaths of two babies in Coimbatore trigger panic among public
Coimbatore: Deaths of two babies in Coimbatore trigger panic among public. A 2.5-months-old baby from Masakalipalayam in Coimbatore was found dead hours after administering a pentavalent vaccine in a primary health centre at the same location. The baby was told to have suffered breathing difficulties and did not want to breastfeed, two hours after taking the vaccine. However, District health officials said that the baby died of pneumonia.
Further, adding fuel to the tragic incident, another baby, who was just a one-and-a-half months old boy, vaccinated from the centre in Sowripalayam in Coimbatore, died in the early morning on Thursday. The incident took place hours after the first case, in which the one-and-a-half months old baby suffered no previous ailments.
When contacted, sources in the health sector say this is an unprecedented event and relating these deaths to vaccines without confirmation would create panic among the public. The sources also added that the one-and-a-half months old baby did not have any complaints unlike in the first case. Several paediatrician and healthcare experts suggest that it is best for the parents to know the health details of infants before administering a vaccine. Experts also noted that the deaths cannot be because of the vaccine as all the other 13 children who administered with the same are doing fine.
However, the State Health Department has a team of experts to investigate the deaths of two children. Multiple attempts to reach the District Director of Health Rameshkumar failed.
