Coimbatore: Under the leadership of Dr. A. Nirmala, Dean ESI Hospital, Coimbatore, the team of workforce successfully overcame many-a-challenges during the COVID-19 crisis and treated patients from all walks of life at the hospital.
In the words of the Dean, Dr. Nirmala, the worst is over. However, we must be careful, she cautions. “With the pongal festival just few days away, we can expect people to gather in huge numbers. As much as we possibly can, we must try and avoid mass gatherings. Also, we must stick to the basics like washing hands thoroughly, wearing masks when we step out and maintain social distancing at all public spaces", the Dean said.
Recently, the number of patients who are infected with coronavirus in Coimbatore has come down drastically. Hence, the number of patients undergoing treatment at the Government-run ESI Hospital here has seen a steep dip in Covid admissions.
“In the peak season, during the months of August, September and October, our hospital saw anywhere between 450 and 500 cases a day. However, presently, we are treating only a few hundred patients infected with the virus.” she told SimpliCity.
Briefing on the new strain of virus, she reiterates that there surely is no need to panic, as it is under control. "Currently, a 27-year old male patient who visited the UK is undergoing treatment at an isolated ward at the hospital here. His swab samples have been sent to the Virology lab in Pune and results are awaited", she said.
A source tracing of the aforesaid patient has been done and the persons with whom the patient was in contact with have been tested negative, we are told.
Stating that the worst is over, Dean, Nirmala is optimistic of a bright future. “Life will be optimistic and peaceful post the pandemic. For those who have successfully combated the virus, we have our post COVID-19 OP which is functional at our hospital. Every day as many as 8 to 10 patients visit the clinic where they are taught breathing exercises, physiotherapy and provided counselling", she informed.
The Dean concluded the conversation on a positive note saying that she is positive that a second wave will not happen in the city. "If in case an outbreak of the COVID-19 reoccurs, the ESI Hospital is prepared to handle the situation", Dean, Nirmala assured.
The trail run of the COVID-19 vaccine was successfully conducted at the hospital recently and the hospital has submitted its list of healthcare workers and students to receive the vaccine. Names of around 1,200 students and medical professionals have been included in the list.
