Coimbatore: Like an increased rate in panic buying amidst the lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic, people opting for flu shots across the country have also been increasing, mostly due to the misunderstanding that it might save them from Covid-19.

Hospitals in Bengaluru are witnessing a rise in demand for flu shots, but however in Tamil Nadu, it doesn’t seem to be the same.

Flu shots are generally taken by people in the winter season, which can sometimes increase the demand. With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, people are opting for flu shots in certain states across the country which has put health experts worried.

Experts say it is just a vaccine that helps recover from H1N1 virus and seasonal flu and that it has nothing to do with prevention of Covid-19.

Booma, a paediatrician from CMCH told that there are plenty of flu shots available at CMCH for the required people and thus not run out of stocks. She also said that people are not opting flu shots amid the pandemic situation in Coimbatore.

The doctor added that the flu shots are being supplied by private agencies and doesn’t have any record on how many so far have been provided, on being asked.

While it is talked amid health experts that it helps in reducing infected lungs, it is almost recommended for the people above 60 years old without comorbidities.

It is also recommended for the patients with asthma and diabetics, says a doctor at CMCH.

Health experts reiterated that people should not confuse flu shots as the vaccine for Covid-19 and added that it can only decrease infection in affected lungs.
