'How to care for your children during the COVID-19 pandemic?' - Paediatrician Dr. A. Jayavardhana

Coimbatore: Paediatrician Dr. A. Jayavardhana from the Department of Paediatrics at PSG Hospitals explained about caring for children during COVID-19 pandemic. He said children do get COVID-19, but they seem to get it less often than the adults and it's usually less serious.

He listed out symptoms that parents have to watch for and take their children to doctors in OP ward. They include:

• When the child has a temperature of 39 C or higher, or you think they have a fever

• When the child has other signs of illness, such as a rash, as well as a high temperature (fever)

• When the child has a high temperature that has lasted for 5 days or more

• When the child does not want to eat, or is not their usual self and you're worried

• When the child has a high temperature that does not come down with paracetamol

• When the child is dehydrated – for example, nappies are not very wet, sunken eyes, and no tears when they're crying

He listed out instances that parents have to watch for and take their child to paediatric emergency. They include:

• When the child has a stiff neck

• When the child has a rash that does not fade

• When the child is bothered by light

• When the child has a seizure or fits for the first time

• When the child has unusually cold hands and feet

• When the child has pale, blotchy, blue or grey skin

• When the child has a weak, high-pitched cry that's not like their usual cry

• When the child is drowsy and hard to wake

• When the child is extremely agitated (does not stop crying) or is confused

• When the child finds it hard to breathe

• When the child is not responding like they usually do, or not interested in feeding or usual activities
