Coimbatore: West Zone IG Periyayya in the a release said that as opposed to 12,619 cases in 2019, 10,286 cases were filed this year and Rs. 8.45 crore worth stolen assets recovered.

Tamil Nadu West Zone Police IG Periyayya in Coimbatore met the reporters at his office at the Race Course last evening. He said that the death toll from road accidents in 2019 was 2082 in the west zone which includes 8 districts namely Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem suburbs, Namakkal, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. Due to awareness, motor vehicle death toll has dropped to 1675 this year and it was 19.55 per cent less than the previous year.

He said, "A total of 12,619 cases were reported in 2019 which has come down to 10,286 this year. This is 18. 48 percent less than last year. A total of 33,93,835 motor vehicle accident cases were registered during this year. This year there are 14 lakh 18 thousand 798 more cases than last year and a fine of Rs 20,54,56,340 was collected for motor vehicle cases and paid to the state treasury. Police stations identified accident prone areas and marked them as black spots and took action to prevent accidents there. One day per month in each district was declared as accident free day and on that day action was taken to prevent accidents."

He also added that, "Murder, attempted murder, and assault cases are down 102 this year compared to last year. There have been 1,454 reported cases of murder for gains this year and this is 766 fewer cases than last year. Last year there were 15 murder for gain cases, 238 highway robbery cases and this year there were 13 muder for gain cases and 111 highway robbery cases. In the West Zone, 68 percent of stolen property was recovered. Out of the stolen assets that was worth Rs 12.36 crore, assets worth Rs 8.45 crore were recovered and handed over to the rightful owners."
