The Southern Railway has transported over 3.56 lakh passengers stranded at various locations in the past 29 days with 258 special Shramik trains having been used to achieve this.
Coimbatore: The Southern Railway has transported over 3.56 lakh passengers stranded at various locations in the past 29 days with 258 special Shramik trains having been used to achieve this.
The Shramik trains began operating on May 1 to transport migrant workers, students and patients back to their home states. This was done with the backing of state governments.
A total of 13 Shramik trains were operated on May 29 alone from Tamil Nadu and Kerala to transport 20,268 passengers. While seven trains carrying 11,290 passengers were operated from TN, six trains carrying 8,978 passengers were operated from Kerala. Of the seven from TN, two left from Coimbatore to Darbhanga, Bihar and Malda Town, West Bengal, two left Chengalpattu forMalda Town, West Bengal, and Muzaffarpur, Bihar, and Two departed from Chennai Egmore to Madhubani, Bihar, and Jehanabad Court, West Bengal, and one from Tirupur toHajipur, Bihar.
A total of 271 Shramik trains have been used to transport over 3,56,014 passengers all over India until May 29 out of which 184 are from TN, 68 from Kerala, 17 from Karnataka, and 2 from Puducherry. A total of 51 left from Dr. MGR Chennai Central and 12 from Chennai Egmore. While Coimbatore has waved off 33 trains, Tirupur sent has sent 16 and Tiruvallur 16trains.
The destinations for the Shramik trains include Bihar (80), UP (53), Jharkhand (42), Odisha (26) and West Bengal (28).
The State governments coordinated with Southern Railways and provided the travellers with food and water arrangements. Social distancing guidelines issued by the Home Ministry and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare were enforced at the railway stations. A frontline staff team including RPF, ticket checking staff and supervisors were deployed at all the railway stations to screen the passengers and check their temperatures. Further they assisted with the maintenance of social distancing and distribution of food and water to the passengers.
