Following Dr. P Kanagasabapathi : The energy behind IECC ( Indian Economic & Cultural Centre )

Indic Academy was founded with the idea of promoting Indic thought in every sphere of life. INDICA, Coimbatore Chapter has been quite active over the last few years.

Quite a few eminent speakers like Sanjeev Sanyal, Amish Tripathi, Hindol Sengupta, K.Subramaniam , Harshit Jain have addressed thousands of Coimbatoreans in order to awaken the already existing Indic spirit in them. The success of these programmes coupled with the state of our country impelled the members of INDICA to come up with a series of lectures in the educational institutions in our region.

Prof P.Kanagasabapathi of IECC joined hands with INDICA for this purpose. The learned scholar has been an eminent academician and also he has vast knowledge of native economics which had nurtured India in the past. The year 2003 was a water shed year for the kite festival economy of Gujarat.

The kites were made by diverse communities and had a huge reach in the state. The Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi requested a committee to look into the kite economy. They studied the same and came up with a coffee table book. The team which consisted of Prof P.Kanagasabapathi did yeomen service and this resulted in a huge growth which was multi fold. The work structure enabled people and manufacturers alike to source material from places like the north east and use them for making kites. Thanks to these efforts the Kite Festival in Gujarat has become global. So much so that we have a Kite Festival at Pollachi on an annual basis.

The first of these lectures took place at the Rathinam College on 11 th February 2019. Jagannathan of INDICA, Coimbatore gave the welcome address. The packed auditorium consisted of students, teachers and members of the Indic Academy, Coimbatore. The Professor spoke about the imported model of socialism post independence under the stewardship of Prime Minister Nehru.

He added information and statistics which proved beyond doubt that the imported model was an utter failure. Examples pertaining to Russia and China were elucidated upon. He spoke about the Indian economic crisis which had forced Prime Minister Chandrashekhar to pledge gold with the Bank of England.

The economic crisis had forced Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao to open up the unprepared Indian economy to global predators. The closed door socialistic model was substituted by an avarice led globalized model. In spite of providing remedies, the new policy did not fulfil the aspirations of the poor. It took some more Prime Ministers to look into this matter and the visionary Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee did his best. The infrastructure created by Vajpayee had helped the economy to come of the bottleneck.

Prof P.Kanagasabapathi has done extensive research on the pump industry cluster and the flower bazaar in Coimbatore. He told the students that local entrepreneurial spirit should prevail upon them and this will help them to rise above the dust. The good scholar spoke about women being the economic backbone of the family. The saving mentality of the Indian women had insulated the economy of the family and the country as well. This aspect has been proven through the growth at the per capita level in the Jan Dhan savings accounts nationally. The women who had saved helped in nurturing entrepreneurship ad this had indirectly ensured gender equality too. Women empowerment and savings went hand in hand while improving the economy through creativity and innovation.

The VIKING company example was drawn upon by Prof P.Kanagasabapathi. He shared the story of the grandmother of the Founder of VIKING knit wear who helped him reach great heights in life after a big rollercoaster ride. This story from Tirupur was much appreciated by the students who attended the meeting. He also spoke about traditional Indian wisdom and the ancient value systems of our people. The Professor told the gathering that the Indian system of ethics will forever stand guard over the economy.

Prof P.Kanagasabapathi wanted the students to embrace our ancient value systems while pursuing their work in life. He requested them to become entrepreneurs in the future. His speech extolled students to start ventures instead of merely seeking employment. He reminded the students of the entrepreneurial spirit of Coimbatore while also talking about the economic greatness of India from time immemorial. In short, Prof P.Kanagasabapathi is seeking to revitalize our academics and the world of commerce by invigorating the right spirit among the youngsters.

The series of lectures by Prof P.Kanagasabapathi in the educational institutions in and around Coimbatore will add value to our ethics and commerce during the times to come.
