The ' Lakshmi Prasada Anugraha Hanuman ' resides near the Peepal tree in the Nanjundapuram Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple. He is known to shower good fortune on the devotees visiting the temple. Lord Ganesha is ever resident under this big tree cluster which continues to add to the health of the village. An old Kaliamman Temple is located in the same spot. Nanjundapuram has a number of places of worship and the people who have established them had the foresight to create endowments in order to maintain and manage them.

Sri Karivaradaraja Perumal Temple was endowed in this current form by the most charitable N.R.Karuppanna Nadar. The visionary son of Coimbatore has created a number of charitable endowments. This temple came up due to his efforts in the year, 1914. " The shrine of Karaivana Perumal has been here for the last centuries. In fact he belongs to the Vijayanagar Era. My great grand father built a new shrine on the same spot. The Lord came in his dream and told him that he existed in the same spot and hence he installed him within the precincts of the temple. An old ' Kalkodimaram ' used to be present on the same place and in order to ensure that this was not misused, it was placed as part of the wall along with the Peepul tree those days. The Hanuman side of the kodimaram is within the temple and the Garudalwar side is on the other side. We do a pooja to the Garudalwar once every year. Great grandfather has created a system for the management of the temple," stated Sankar Manivannan (Hereditary Trustee). N.R.Karuppanna Nadar had been the Hereditary Trustee from 1914 and he was involved until 1961. His son K.Rangaswamy Nadar took over thereafter. The grandson N.R.Sankaranarayanan succeeded his father and now Sankar Manivannan manages the temple. His father continues to live in Nanjundapuram.

The temple is constructed in the ' Thanjavur Bhaani ' and it has shrines for Sri Varadaraja along with Sridevi and Bhumidevi, Hanuman, Karaivana Perumal and a Marathadi Pillayar. The Lakshmi Prasada Anugraha Hanuman is near the Pillaiyar and the icon of Lord Venugopala is also part of the temple. A fine Kalkodimaram addsto the vintage of the temple. The ' Pearl ' like handwriting of Vathsala Shankar comes to our aid with regard to the procedures to be followed in this old temple. She happens to be the grand daughter in law of N.R.Karuppanna Nadar.

"The temple has poojas thrice a day. Every month the Thiruvonam Star and the two Ekadashis are celebrated. Annually we celebrate the Vaikunta Ekadashi, Maasi Thiruvonam, Ugadhi, Tamil New Year, Utharayana & Dakshinayana Punyakalangal, Grahana Punyakalam. We have a Thirumanjanam for Diwali too. N.R.Kandaswamy Nadar family take care of the Sri Jayanthi Uthsavam, Navarathri is attended to by the family of N.R.Nanjayya Nadar, Thai Amavasya Kattalai is by the Boyars, Sri Rama Navami, Purattasi Sanikizhamai, Marghazi Poojas, Vaikunta Ekadashi and Maasi Thiruvonam are conducted year on year. Every detail connected with the pooja, offerings, dress, jewellery, decoration etc., are well documented by our family. From the namam material to flowers to oil to ablution materials are listed. We want to maintain the same system for eternity. Even the pandhams used to lighting up the way is in our list and the oil required for it has been quantified. The people required for carrying the deity and the music troupe requirements are found in the notes. Our temple is managed as per the Srirangam Thenkalai Sampradhayam in accordance to the Pancharathra Agamam. The Nagars and the East facing Ganesha are located under the Peepul and Neem trees. The temple tree is ' Karai Vruksham '," added Sankar Manivannan.
A house belonging to the system is used for housing the temple priest along with his family. The Tamil month of Margazhi is the time to visit the temple. They open early and a group of devotees consisting of men and women offer their prayers. The ' Thiruppavai ' of Andal and other songs from the earlier eras are rendered. Naivedyam is offered every day and it is distributed to everyone present. It is kesari or venpongal or sarkarai Pongal. A number of people wish to offer this as their kattalai or contribution. Besides the Naivedyam , breakfast is offered to a few hundred people during the entire month up to Pongal. The women set the place by placing the mats on the ground. Thereafter leaves are placed before serving. Everyone cleans their plantain leaf with water before taking the food. Prayers are rendered before partaking the breakfast. Sukku coffee is served to each and every person. The men and women from the local community serve food day after day. Their smiling face, service mindedness and joy are quite evident. Its Indian culture at its best.
The Perumal Koil Veedhi looks fresh every morning. Each of the houses welcome the visitors with a kolam, a small cone of cow dung anointed with a flower. Our villages are cleaner than most of the cities. No wonder ' India has been living in the villages '.

The Hereditary Trustee Sankar Manivannan can be seen with his friends and relatives every day during Margazhi and the other important days. All of them have been blessed with dedication. I visited the temple on a Marghazi Sadhayam day with my aunt Nirmala and uncle Sitarama Guptha. It happens to be the birthday of my late father K.Govindarajulu. Father was deeply attached to this temple and he used to visit it along with my mother Aravindakumari quite often.

The temple authorities served us Kesari and it was followed by a breakfast which consisted of sambar, chutney, sevai, idli and vadai. The soul filling breakfast gave us a sense of fulfilment. We hope to visit the temple every year on the same day.

The families of Nanjundapuram are known for their methodical philanthropy. N.R.Karuppanna Nadar and his descendants have served the society very well. The N.R.Karuppanna Nadar Kalvi Nilayam in Kunnathur stands tall among their contributions and the Nanjundapuram Sri Varadaraperumal Temple is a beacon light.
