Child Development activites of Vriddhii

Roshini Verghese and Mythily Padmanabhan can be likened to a ' Rettai Nadhaswaram ' for they are able to work together while doing things individually but intermittently. There is a lot of symphony and ' Vriddhi Child Development Foundation ' is absolutely free from cacophony.

The institution was established in Coimbatore during the March of 2010 in order to work with children with specific learning difficulties with special emphasis on Dyslexia. Vriddhi School for Children with Learning Disabilities was inaugurated by the then Collector Dr.P.Umanath I.A.S. It is a Learning Foundation which works with parents and children , using a multi disciplinary approach. Vriddhi Child Development Foundation is a ' Non Profitable Trust ' registered under Section AA of the Income Tax Act , 1961 and all donations qualify for deduction under 80 G (5) ( VI ) of the Income Tax Act 1961.

The Board of Trustees include eminent auditor K.Murali Mohan and he is known for his interest in social causes. Founder Member Roshini Verghese has been working with children with special needs for  more than a quarter of a century. She was associated with Chennai Dyslexic Association & Alpha to Omega Learning Centre for children with special needs, Chennai from 1991 to 2000. She had done her education in WCC, MCC and is a Post Graduate in English Literature. Roshini has done her Remedial Tutor Training Programme ( approved by the Kansas State University of USA ).

Mythili Padmanabhan the other Founder Member is passionate about working with children. She was brought up in Salem. Mythili had done her education at St.Joseph's and at Sharadha College in Salem. She is a Post Graduate in Applied Psychology and has done a Remedial Tutor Training Programme which is approved by the Kansas State University USA. A Diploma in Montessori Teacher Training happens to be on her list of laurels.

Roshini spoke about her journey while student Monish Madhav rang the bell precisely at 4 PM. " We were in Chennai and our kids had grown up. Did this course at Alpha to Omega Learning Centre. Did honourary work for 10 years. Later my husband George Verghese got transferred to Coimbatore , a city that he was familiar with. Began teaching a few kids , there were issues and then I got hold of Mythili , asked her to do the course. Vriddhi happened thereafter."

Mythili continued thereafter, " Until then I did not know anything about all this. Roshini and George Verghese were good friends of my uncle Dr.Ramkumar Raghupathy. I used to always look upon them and they were like family elders. However I called them by name. George Verghese has been very very supportive. He is very meticulous and we never have to worry about finances. Murali Mohan takes a lot of interest and his kids are quite helpful.  Friends, relatives, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis , Sumanth Ramamurthy of Super Spinning Mills , D.Rajendran of Premier Mills , Ladies Circle No 1 and  Ladies Circle No 23 have been extremely supportive. We get help from Jamuna Chandrashekhar. Volunteers help us too and they prefer to be silent contributors. All our teachers are sincere. We have art, craft, yoga, music and had Bharata Natyam too. Of course there are computer courses for the kids. Started to do assessment for kids. A volunteer and myself did the required course in Bengaluru. We do ' counseling ' too. Now we have big dreams. Our kids need a place for physical activity and it has to be nearby. We have some families who have moved to Sai Baba Colony in order to suit the requirements of the kids. So we prefer to have  it in Sai Baba Colony or nearby. Location is the key."

Life Skills is imparted by this hallowed institution. " We make people ready for life. They are taught how to travel by bus. Bank work, post office work, getting tickets in the railway station etc.,  are  taught through experiences. We make sure that they travel by bus, purchase the ticket and collect the balance change. The stationary shop in the school comes in very handy. Some kids run it and other buy from the shop. This is for ' common sense calculation '. Ability to do the day to day work is very important. Even crossing the road is a part of all this. Our kids have done very well in life. 40 of them went to mainstream schools. One student is abroad now while another is in a good college. Some of them are working in different parts of the country. For some ' anger management ' has worked really well. Every improvement is important and LIFE SKILLS is the goal. Of course we have been a witness to the social stigmas connected with sending kids to a special school. Everything is available with people like us but the parents have to take it up. Getting worried about sending kids to our kind of institutions because of ' social stigma ' should go, " added Roshini Verghese.

The mission of Vriddhi is to spread awareness about specific learning difficulties in schools and among the public. To this end, they regularly hold workshops and seminars for all school teachers ad parents. Their objective is to return children to the mainstream schools after appropriate intervention. Vriddhi is a full time facility which runs between 10 AM and 4 PM. Kids in Vriddhi have been referred by schools in Coimbatore, Pollachi, Palakkad etc., and are also recommended by child psychologists. They have specially trained and qualified teachers to work with students on  a one to one basis. Children with learning difficulties require one to one by specially trained teachers. A screening process is done in order to evaluate the kid's grade level and individual lesson plans are prepared thereafter.

Vriddhi being a charitable trust , helps deserving kids with financial help. The cost of educating a child for one year is around Rs.80,000 and it is met by financial support from family, friends and philanthropists.

" We go to a number of schools in order to screen the kids. However we do not information . Parents are requested not to label the child and we are here to help them improve. We do remedial teaching also. Kids going to regular school come here for help. We train teachers during the summer holidays. Well, I have to tell you about instrumental enrichment. Its a series of books which help kids to learn a lot of things like ' spatial intelligence '. They have organization of dots and empathy is also part of all this, " added Mythili.

Mainstream kids are taught time management, organizing of lessons. Vriddhi has strategies for mind mapping . " We are ready to reach out and do our bit.  It will be good if schools  assure the parents that they will take them back after an assessment , post their programme with us at Vriddhi. A few schools are ready to do this. At the moment we are working on this line  and a school is ready to take the kids back. This should become the order of the day, " smiled Roshini Verghese.
