Not even a full year after one of the biggest consumer tech PR disasters in history, Samsung has bounced back with its most profitable quarter yet -- enough to push it past Apple as the world's most profitable tech company. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, the South Korean chaebol announced today that its Q2 operating profit of this year finished at a record 14 trillion won (US$12.1 billion), a bit higher than Apple's expected US$10.6 billion operating profit over the same period.
The bump is due to Samsung's booming semiconductor business and also the smash success of the Galaxy S8 (a device that I think is the best feeling/looking phone hardware ever).And while quarterly numbers tend to bounce up and down depending on the time of year -- last year, Huawei briefly overtook Samsung as the most profitable Android maker following the Note 7 blunder -- Samsung and Apple have been the top two for years now, and it's unlikely anyone will overtake them anytime again unless one of them suffers another Note 7-level product failure.
