10 steps to a new kitchen

Opt for perfect lighting, sleek furniture and plenty of space

A kitchen may be more about function than form but who says it can’t look as gorgeous as the rest of your home?

Keep these designing rules in mind to make the space not only convenient to work in but also gorgeous.

1. Colour it good

White is a great choice for kitchen interiors. It reflects light and makes the space look roomier. White cabinets and counter tops will blend into the background.

If you want to make it colourful, choose from the same colour palette for an expansive look and to make shifts less obvious.

2. Let there be light

Be mindful of the light so that your workspace is well-illuminated. If the light is behind you, it will cast a shadow on your work area. Let the light fall directly on the counter top and in front of you. Hint: use under cabinet lights.

3. Opt for sleek furniture

Bring home chairs and tables with slender legs. Those with thick bases will make the kitchen look unwieldy. This especially helps if you have a smaller kitchen.

4. Make space for appliances

You have a number of appliances — refrigerator, oven, taster, blender, chimney hood, maybe even a dishwasher. Before you set up the kitchen, make sure it has all the right electric outlets to make things convenient for you.

5. Ensure safety

Child-proof your kitchen with rounded edges and slip-resistant flooring, which will also be safer for you.

If you do have kids at home, keep the oven at the level of your face or shoulders at least so that kids won’t reach it.

6. Try glass cabinets

Glass doors for your cabinets or open shelves create illusion of space and provide the kitchen depth, making it look bigger.

You can also spot things you need quicker. Open shelves also make the kitchen look more inviting to guests. You might just need to keep everything in shipshape though.

7. Leave no dead space

Try to utilise every inch of your kitchen space. If you have a thick wall next to the fridge gawking at you, make integrated storage to keep the kitchen organised.

Use overhead spaces for cabinets and let the cabinets touch the ceiling to prevent dust accumulation. Deep drawers make sense to store all your big pots and pans.

8. Centre your cooking station

If your gas range and chimney hood are at the centre of the cabinets, symmetry will make the interior look neater and also keep things within reach. Your slick stove can also be the focal point. Enhance the space by getting an elegant back splash.

9. Decorate with essentials

Decorate the kitchen pretty. Decorate a magazine rack with cookbooks, keep a magnificent bowl full of fruits, and flaunt your gorgeous cutlery and crockery especially if it’s heirloom in stylish cabinets.

10. Pick non-porous flooring

It makes for easy maintenance and durability. It won’t stain as well. Resist the temptation of hardwood flooring because it will fray more easily no thanks to the fridge, sink, and stove. Natural stone looks elegant or you can try the hardwood look.
