It starts with the loud orange and steadily moves towards beautifully flourishing deep maroon, finally settling down with a shade of brown that creates a sense of comfort and cosiness. Let the autumn leaves give you colour cues for the season. Or would you rather go for the deep shades of pumpkin? Maybe it's the rich burgundy of mulled wine or the lushness of a juicy red apple for you? Would you rather dial it down with a rust or maple? Because come November, it's time to say bye to vibrant summer colours. Go for some non-traditional dark colours that blend with the transitioning season and add depth and warmth to your ensemble.

Colour Report:

The runways too are getting a colour makeover. Designers like Derek Lam, Marc Jacobs, Vionnet and Tory Burch sent fall colours down the runways. Closer home, designers Monica and Karishma brought together stark crimsons, mauve and earthy browns with radiant yellows. Designer Narendra Kumar added a distinctly Indian flavour to western silhouettes with colour play.

Most autumnal shades go dramatically well with neutrals, including warmer taupe and grey. Because of their burnished undertones, these sultry shades suit most skin tones too. Designer Premal Badiani says that fall colours transition well from the runways to the real world. Her must-dos for the season? Layering essentials in rich colours from nature. "Look in terms of different shapes and sizes - from a leather jacket, anti-fit ensembles and cosy sweaters to buttoned-up cold-shoulder blouses and knitted scarves. Men can pick patterned knits, V-neck jumpers, knitted scarves or shoes in a jewel tone," she says.

Keep It Small:

Choosing the right accessory is paramount to pulling a look together, says designer Sonam Gupta. Her advice? If you don't want to wear head-to-toe dark, deep look, start with accessories. For instance, work in a structured rust tote, or a maroon fedora or Marsala-coloured heels. "A plush scarf or poncho in gemstone purple is always dependable. Men can opt for eye-catching accessories like a cashmere scarf, woven tie, pocket square, socks, belts and beanies that's bound to give a playful twist to any look," she adds.

Look Luxe:

Always steered clear from a bold red lip? Try painting your pout in its richer version. Pair a luxury lip colour with gold eye shadow, or a dramatic black-winged eyeliner for the night. Add some wine-coloured nail art to complete the look.

Most fall colours look best in rich textures or fabrics like suede, velvet, knits and leathers. Try using jewel tones as your base colour and pair it with other rich fabrics like silk and chiffon.

Keep it stylish in burgundy and rust for the season. Asymmetry and relaxed fits are in. Also go for accents like elbow pads and knee patches.

Wear relaxed cuts in deeper mauve and reds. Make sure your florals for the season are darker too.

Green and deeper red creates a warm look that is just right for the transition season.

Pick warmer greys and pair your winter saris with a trench.
