Coimbatore: Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Commissioner, M Prathap warned cattle-owners of fines being imposed and criminal action that will be taken against them if they do not heed the warning to ensure that their cows are not straying onto roads.
In Coimbatore Corporation areas, the public and motorists have been more prone to accidents and various hazards since cattle-owners have allowed their cows to freely roam on roads.
Cows have been seen roaming on city roads, lying down right in the middle of the roads, dragging garbage from dustbin for their food and dirtying neighbourhoods, disrupting vehicular traffic, etc.
Owing to a spate of accidents that motorists have been in, due to these stray cows, the Corporation has followed up with strict action and issued a major announcement.
The CCMC Commissioner stated in a press release, "A fine will be imposed on the owner of the cattle roaming on the roads within Corporation areas. In case of failure to pay the fine, the seized cattle will be auctioned and the amount will be deposited in the Corporation treasury. In Coimbatore Corporation areas, there have been several complaints from the public about cows roaming on the streets and roads obstructing both public and traffic.
In order to avoid this, the work of catching the cattle roaming on the streets and roads is carried out in Corporation vehicles. If the cow has been caught for the first time, the owner can recover the cow by paying a fine of Rs.10,000. In case of failure to pay the fine, the caught cattle will be auctioned by the Corporation and the amount will be deposited in the Corporation treasury.
Also, if the captured cows roam the streets and roads again, a case will be registered against the owner of the cow and criminal action will be taken," warned M Prathap.
