Bird flu affects chicken, ducks, turkeys and other wild birds. It can affect humans as well. Hence farmers are advised to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of bird flu. It is said that birds should be taken care of without entering the farm. Different species of birds like ducks, turkeys etc. should not be kept on the same farm. Outsiders, vehicles, and animals should not enter the farm, equipment should not be shared, equipment should be cleaned with disinfectant twice a month and abnormal deaths should be reported to a veterinarian immediately.
Bird flu reportedly is not contracted by eating well-cooked chicken and eggs. The disease can be prevented only through health precautionary measures. Therefore, the import of poultry, birds and related items from Kerala and other parts of the state bordering Kerala into the Nilgiris district has been temporarily banned.
Meanwhile, the Animal Husbandry Department has been spraying disinfectant on vehicles coming from outside the state on the Karnataka-Kerala state border in Gudalur. Bhagwatsingh, Deputy Director, District Animal Husbandry inspected the Kakkanallah check post on the Gudalur-Karnataka border.
