Pulse polio immunization programme postponed untill further notice
: Coimbatore: The pulse polio immunisation programme scheduled to be held on January 17 across the nation, has been postponed until further notice, the Union Ministry of Health said in a statement.
In a letter dated January 10, addressedto all states and union territories, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare noted that the programme has been postponed in line with the unforeseen activities. However, it there was no mention about the speculation that the postponement is due to the Covid-19 vaccination procedures.
While WHO has certified that India has eradicated Polio, the presence of poliomyelitis in two neighbouring countries, the need for the programme has come again, which will immunise children under the age of five.
Meanwhile, in Kerala, the Health Minister KK Shailaja had confirmed that the revised date shall be announced later.
However, speculations are rife that the decision by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is in view of COVID-19 vaccination drive, which is to begin from January 16.
