Status report of Coimbatore District Police 2020: Action taken against 41 murders, 400 robberies, 63 POCSO cases

Coimbatore: Coimbatore District Police in a report of action for 2020 said they took action on 41 murders, 400 robberies, 63 POCSO cases. They also added in a heartfelt press release that along with criminals they also had to deal with a dangerous virus this year.

In their report they said, "On behalf of the Coimbatore District Police, we wish all the public a Happy English New Year and Pongal on the occasion of the end of the challenging year 2020 and the beginning of year 2021. The last one year has been a very challenging period for the police department. The war with the invisible virus was the most challenging task along with the task of protecting the lives and properties of civilians"

The report said the accused have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody in 38 of the 41 murder cases reported this year. In Coimbatore district 307 cases (77%) out of 400 cases registered for robbery was solved and the value of the stolen property was Rs. 3,77,50,125. 85% of the assets worth Rs. 3,19,65,540 have been recovered and handed over to the rightful owners. Cases of murder (2), gang robbery (4), higway theft (39), house burglary (6) and theft (349) were registered

Day and night patrols carried out on the instructions of higher authorities have reduced the number of criminal cases by 185 this year as compared to 2019. 4% more criminal cases have been detected this year than in the last 2019. Of this, 7% more stolen items (85%) have been recovered this year and handed over to the rightful owners. The court gave the life sentence in 5 of the 7 murder cases pending this year, 7 years imprisonment in 2 cases and life imprisonment in 1 murder case and also ordered 10 years imprisonment in gang robbery case. Accused have been arrested, remanded in judicial custody and prosecuted for six rape cases against women in Coimbatore district this year. The number of reported cases of child sexual abuse (POCSO) was 63. Accused have been arrested and legal action has been taken in all cases.

In addition, 121 criminal cases have been registered under the Violence Against Women Act. Out of 8 POCSO cases held in the POCSO Special Court this year, the accused has been sentenced to life imprisonment in 5 cases, 7 years imprisonment in 1 case, 5 years imprisonment in 1 case and 3 years imprisonment in 1 case. There have been 10 more POCSO cases reported this year than last year due to public awareness about crimes against children.

The report added that this his year, 4794 cases were registered in connection with the Drugs Prohibition Act, 120 cases under the Narcotics Prevention Act, 252 cases in connection with the lottery, 382 cases in connection with gambling, 14 cases in connection with the theft of sand, and 499 cases in connection with the sale of goods such as tobacco and gutka banned by the Government and appropriate steps have been taken to prevent such incidents. A total of 3263 awareness programs have been conducted this year on safe driving. As a result, motor vehicle accident cases have been reduced from 1814 to 1724 compared to last year. The number of people killed in road accidents last year has dropped from 456 to 371 this year. This year, 3,57,194 MV Petty Cases have been registered in Coimbatore district, of which 3,265 have had their driving licenses revoked, including drunk driving and reckless driving.

Coronavirus infection was confirmed in 179 people in the police department because they worked closely with the public. WPC 323 Thanga Isakki of the Coimbatore District Armed Forces died of coronavirus infection. Everyone else has recovered and is in perfect health. A total of 23080 cases have been registered against violators and 28200 persons have been arrested during the COVID-19 lockdown periods of the Government. 20300 vehicles have been confiscated from them and all vehicles have been released.

A total of Rs. 33,00,350 was collected as penalty from violators. Currently, those who do not wear a face mask and violate government rules are prosecuted and a total fine of Rs. 15,49,000 has been collected. Twice, an online drawing competition was held in connection with the COVID-19 infection and prizes were awarded to children. As a result of raising awareness among the public 2399 new CCTV cameras often called as the third eye have been set up this year. As a result, this helped in solving more criminal cases this year. This has helped in finding more crime cases in Coimbatore district than in 2019

During the last 3 months for 1150 petitions police have visited the petitioner's house and conducted inquiries and conducted 15 special camps and resolved the petitions immediately. 1056 cases were completed in National Lok Adalat court on 12.12.2020. The family was informed that a special camp was held on November 22 last year to find the missing and this month a special camp to find the missing children was conducted till 25/12/2020 to find 44 missing persons and identify the unidentified dead. 12 missing teenagers have been found by a special camp.
